Inspects various establishments or locations (e.g., wholesale, retail and food service establishments, milk production plants, meat processing plants, schools, swimming pools and sewage and water systems) to detect possible health code violations. Collects food or water samples for laboratory analysis; condemns unsafe food. Investigates community complaints of poor sanitation in public establishments or private property; explains City Health ordinances and recommends corrective action; performs follow-up inspections; issues warnings or citations. Logs and maintains related files and prepares reports. Ensures that City health applications and permits are properly issued. May issue City health permits. May appear in court to testify regarding violations; provides evidence in enforcement hearings. May conduct food managers’ certification courses. Will perform other duties as assigned.

KNOWLEDGE: A Bachelor’s degree, which includes 30 semester hours of basic or applied science courses, is required.

EXPERIENCE: No experience is required.

License: Must pass the State of Texas Registered Sanitarian examination within twelve months of employment as a Sanitarian I with the Health and Human Services Department. A valid Texas driver’s license is required.
